Farewell to Bishop Flores

by Robert Delaney of The Michigan Catholic
Published January 29, 2010

Bishop FloresDETROIT – Priests of the Archdiocese of Detroit said good-bye to Bishop Daniel Flores Jan. 21, as he entered his final days here before leaving to take up his new duties as bishop of Brownsville, Texas.

A reception and dinner for Bishop Flores followed a special Vespers service at Sacred Heart Major Seminary .

Besides Archbishop Allen Vigneron, other bishops present included Auxiliary Bishop Francis Reiss, retired Auxiliary Bishop Moses Anderson, SSE, and Bishop Earl Boyea, a former Detroit auxiliary who is now bishop of Lansing.

Bishop Flores is to be installed as the ordinary of his new diocese on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

As the first Hispanic auxiliary bishop to be named for the archdiocese, Bishop Flores was received with enthusiasm by local Latino Catholics when he arrived in late 2006. Since that time, he has also endeared himself to Catholics of other ethnicities.

"When we had to close St. Andrew's (in 2008), he was there, and I think he was as sad about it as I was," said Fr. Julian Chmurra, former pastor of the westside parish.

Last Friday afternoon, Bishop Flores held open house at his residence in Ferndale so that other archdiocesan employees could drop by to say their good-byes.
