DETROIT – Jesuit Fr. Gregory Chisholm will share his experience and insights into effective urban ministry as part of the Living the Word II conference Saturday, June 5, at Sacred Heart Major Seminary.
As pastor of a parish in Oakland, Calif., and in Los Angeles before that, Fr. Chisholm has made a name for himself in the topic he will speak about: "Overcoming the Challenges of Ministry at the Margins – Strategies for More Effective Parishes."
The conference, sponsored by the Trinity Vicariate, will also feature Mark Mogika, director of stewardship and pastoral services for the Diocese of Green Bay, Wis., speaking on "Parish Planning Best Practices."
This is the second year the vicariate has sponsored a conference focusing on urban ministry. "We all have to look for creative ways of doing ministry in the city," said Fr. Donald Archambault, vicar of the Trinity Vicariate and pastor of Corpus Christi Parish, Detroit.
"Everybody agrees there is a need to re-create ministry in the City of Detroit. The intent of this workshop is to open our minds and hearts to the possibilities of ministry in the city," he continued.
But the conference may also be of interest to those outside the city limits. "Many of the challenges faced by parishes in the nearer suburbs and other places in the archdiocese are similar to those faced by parishes in Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck," Fr. Archambault added.
Besides the two keynote speakers, the conference will also include presentations on economic and community planning issues, and the Alpha Course for Catholics, as well as Fr. Thomas Lumpkin of the Detroit Catholic Worker community.
Fr. Chisholm's urban ministry experience also includes helping out at St. Gregory the Great Parish in Detroit when he was a member of the University of Detroit Mercy faculty from 1993-98.
Before studying for the priesthood at Jesuit-run Heythrop College in England and the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Massachusetts, he earned a doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Fr. Chisholm just recently returned from Nairobi, Kenya, where he taught a course in pastoral practices.
Currently, besides being pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Oakland, he also teaches at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley.
