July 12-16 at Cobo Hall
Church Musicians Gather in Detroit, Mayor Archer to Speak
Issued: July 8, 2010
More than 2,000 Catholic Church musicians from throughout the country are expected to descend on Cobo Hall as the Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit hosts the 33rd annual National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM) Convention from July 12-16. Along with major figures in the field of pastoral music, former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer will speak at the convention on July 13; his topic is "Joys and Hopes of the Human Family: A Church of Hope in a Time of Fear." The Most Rev. Allen H. Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit, will offer a liturgy for attendees on July 14.
"No matter where it is, for Catholic church musicians the annual convention is as significant an event as they come - so to host it here in Detroit is a rare privilege," says Louis Canter, local chairman for the convention and coordinator of music ministries for the Archdiocese of Detroit. "The convention provides an excellent opportunity for musicians to share their talents and experiences, and to grow both musically and spiritually."
This is the first time since 1981 that Detroit will hold the annual convention. The five-day event will feature more than 150 educational sessions, daily sung prayer, high-quality music performances, new music showcases, and exhibits by sacred music publishers. There also will be a special focus on preparing for the new English translation of the Catholic Mass - something all Catholics in the United States will experience in 2011.
