Dear Friends

The past few days, while on vacation, I noticed a series of emails going across a national site involving private devotions and liturgical prayer. Because this past weekend we celebrated the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, many people were concerned about the use of prayers which were not in the liturgical books. In the end, there was a reminder of the need for private, devotional prayer to support liturgical prayer and for liturgical prayer to support private, devotional prayer. But there were clear indications that these should be separate expressions of our faith and that it would be wise not to mix the two. Each has their importance as separate expressions. This is supported by the GIRM document and others as well. So even on vacation one can learn a thing or two!

Queridos amigos y amigas

Have you checked out the new technology for music on the iPhone, Blackberry, and Droid?  There are apps which can be downloaded for the Roman Missal, Roman Calendar, and Breviary, which can come in handy when you are planning for Mass.   Less books to carry around! I cannot wait to see if any of the publishers will have all their hymnals available to download on the iPad! It may be coming.

Let us pray for one another

We continue to lift in prayer Sr. Shirley Hoski, Linda Phillips, and Anne Merenda. May God continue to bring them to full health. Santiago Fernandez thanks all of us for our prayers for his father. He is recovering very well. Let us also pray for those whose jobs are being downsized, and those looking for jobs at present.

The next Friday’s at Denny’s will take place in Monroe.  This will be at the Denny’s on Dixie Highway, August 27 at 12:15 pm.  See you there, especially Monroe and Downriver musicians.

Peace and all good to you
Louis

Sunday, September 12 will be the annual Evening Prayer Gathering at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament.  This is a time for us to gather, pray for one another, and enjoy fellowship.  Along with the usual festivities, we will get a sneak preview of Christine Chun’s repertoire for the Cesar Frank Organ Competition in the Netherlands.  Christine is one of ten finalists for this event.  This is a great honor for all of us.  She begins the three-round competition a week later, so we get to hear a thirty-minute portion of her materials.  Afterward, we will have the opportunity to wish her well at the fellowship under the tent.  All music ministers from choir members to music directors are welcome. The evening begins at 5 p.m. with prayer.

We would like to celebrate those that have been in ministry for 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, etc. years.

Please let us know if you will be attending by emailing Louis Canter at canter.louis@aod.org.

I need your help!

With the changes in Central Services, there have been changes in the certification process.  I need your help in discerning which topics are practical.  What would you, as musicians within the Archdiocese, recommend for part of the certification process?  Your ideas would help shape the program, which is being reviewed at this time.  Please make your suggestions to louiscanter54@yahoo.com or canter.louis@aod.org.

If you have not seen the latest Michigan Catholic, please look and see the article about Matt Kush, music minister at St. Kieran in Shelby Twp. Matt is using technology in a hyper speed way. If you are interested in learning more about the use of technology in your everyday ministry, please let me know. We are thinking about doing a technology fair in the future if there is an interest.

Congratulations to Stacey Mason, music minister at St. Regis and coordinator of music at St. John’s Chapel! She was accepted as a new member in the Michigan Opera Theater. She will be in the upcoming production of “La Boheme”.
